2024 William G. Pannill Award

‘Tom Terrific’ is the recipient of the 2024 Pannill Award. Registered in 2007, ‘Tom Terrific’ was bred by Dr. John R. Reed from [Boslowick x Sunstroke]. It is an outstanding mid-season, intermediate size, split-corona daffodil with smooth and heavy substance. The bloom has a strong orange corona with split segments folding over brilliant yellow perianth segments. This stunning cultivar is part of Dr. Reed’s “Cartoon/Comic Book” series. 2024 John and Gertrude Wister Award

The 2024 Wister Award is presented to ‘Bantam’, this intermediate sized daffodil is a standout in the garden. Narcissus ‘Bantam’ is an attractive cultivar that was registered prior to 1950, hybridized by Barr and Sons from England, UK, and is included in the ADS Classics and ADS Intermediates special classes. This late blooming daffodil has roundish, blunt, brilliant greenish yellow perianth segments with a bowl-shaped corona that is smooth or lightly ribbed orange, has a broad yellow zone at the base and sometimes has a darker orange at the rim. 2023 ADS Medal Recipients

We are proud to announce and congratulate the recipients of the 2023 ADS Gold and Silver Medals awarded on March 10, 2023 at the American Daffodil Society National Convention in Atlanta, GA.

Robert DarlingRobert Darling of Fayetteville, PA, was awarded the 2023 American Daffodil Society Gold Medal. The Gold Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of creative work of a pre-eminent nature in the understanding and advancement of daffodils”.
 
 
 
 
Dianne MrakDianne Mrak of Dover, NH, was awarded the 2023 American Daffodil Society Silver Medal. The Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of outstanding service to the American Daffodil Society.”

‘Euphonic Bells’ is the recipient of the 2023 Pannill Award. Registered in 2008, ‘Euphonic Bells’ was bred by Richard and Elise Havens from [Limequilla x N. triandrus subsp. triandrus]. It is a beautiful late season standard size daffodil with a white down facing corona whose mouth is straight and lightly ribbed. The perianth segments are oblong and slightly reflexed. 2023 John and Gertrude Wister Award

The 2023 Wister Award is presented to ‘Delibes’, this stunning large-cupped daffodil is a showstopper in the garden. Narcissus ‘Delibes’ is a handsome cultivar that was registered prior to 1950, hybridized by F. Rijnveld and Sons from the Netherlands, and is included in the ADS Classics Daffodils special class. This early to mid-season blooming daffodil has broad greenish-yellow perianth segments with a shallow bowl-shaped corona that is lightly ribbed with vivid yellow shading to orange at the mouth that is frilled. Joe Hamm of Washington, PA, was awarded the 2022 American Daffodil Society Gold Medal. The Gold Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of creative work of a pre-eminent nature in the understanding and advancement of daffodils”.

Janet Hickman of Lynchburg, VA,was awarded the 2022 American Daffodil Society Silver Medal. The Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of outstanding service to the American Daffodil Society.”

It is a spectacular mid-season standard size daffodil with a smooth white perianth and white corona that is ribbed and frilled at the edges. 2022 John and Gertrude Wister Award

The 2022 Wister Award is presented to ‘Blushing Lady’, this jonquilla daffodil is a stand-out in the garden and well deserving of this award. Narcissus ‘Blushing Lady’ is a beautiful 2003 Brent C. Heath hybrid that was registered by Brent and Becky’s Bulbs from Virginia, USA. It is soft yellow with a halo at the base of the cup. At maturity the edges of the cup develop a pink flush. This late blooming hybrid usually has three blooms per stem, it’s blooms are graceful, nicely scented and long-lasting. The Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of outstanding service to the American Daffodil Society.”
 
 
 
Becky Fox Matthews from Brentwood, TN, awarded the Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society. The Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of outstanding service to the American Daffodil Society.”

Jaydee Atkins AgerJaydee Atkins Ager of Hawkinsville, Georgia was awarded the American Daffodil Society President’s Medal. The American Daffodil Society President’s Medal is awarded to people who can only be described as exceptional. They continue to make substantial contributions to our daffodil world above and beyond what is normally expected of any one person. Because of their presence we have a far richer environment than would have been possible without their participation.

Lynn SlackmanLynn Slackman of Shiloh, Illinois was awarded the American Daffodil Society President’s Medal. The American Daffodil Society President’s Medal is awarded to people who can only be described as remarkable. They continue to make substantial contributions to our daffodil world above and beyond what is normally expected of any one person. Because of their presence we have a far richer environment than would have been possible without their participation.

2021 William G. Pannill Award

‘Southern Hospitality’ is the recipient of the 2021 Pannill Award. Registered in 2000, ‘Southern Hospitality’ was bred by Richard and Elise Havens from [( Armada x Paricutin ) x Falstaff]. It is a stunning early to mid-season standard size double daffodil with perianth and other petaloid segments in three whorls, very broadly ovate, blunt, and golden yellow in color. The center whorl is strongly inflexed, with margins folded deeply inward; corona segments half the length of the petaloid segments and interspersed among them at center, tightly ribbed, orange-red, and frilled.

The name ‘Southern Hospitality’ came about as a result of Frank Gaylon looking at blooms at the Mitsch/Havens fields. He returned from the fields talking about a very nice double daffodil that would probably grow very well in the Southern region. And Frank was correct because this daffodil grew very well in the South. Hence the name Southern Hospitality. See past outstanding exhibition daffodils that have been awarded the William G. 2021 John and Gertrude Wister Award

The 2021 Wister Award is presented to ‘Marieke’, a widely available yellow trumpet with a record of excellent garden performance. Narcissus ‘Marieke’ is an absolutely stellar 1986 Konijnenburg & Mark hybrid. It has a huge, upward facing flower with a vivid, yellow perianth and a long, darker yellow trumpet. Its large flowers are beautifully proportioned, graceful despite their size, nicely scented and long-lasting. 2020 ADS Medal Recipient

Mitch Carney from Boonsboro, MD, awarded the Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society. The Silver Medal of the American Daffodil Society is awarded to an individual deemed by the Honors Committee as being worthy of “recognition of outstanding service to the American Daffodil Society.”

2020 William G. Pannill Award

‘Pogo’ is the recipient of the 2020 Pannill Award. Registered in 1989, ‘Pogo’ was bred by Mrs. Goethe (Helen) Link from 14/3BY/1YY Seedling x First Kiss. It is a beautiful mid-season to late standard size daffodil with white perianth segments that are smooth and have good substance; a corona that is small bowl-shaped, with a green center that fades to yellow, and a bright orange rim that is slightly frilled. 2020 John and Gertrude Wister Award

‘Sir Winston Churchill’ is the recipient of the 2020 Wister Award. Registered in 1966, this double daffodil has a white perianth and other petaloid segments in several whorls, and averages 4 flowers per stem. The corona segments are shorter than the center whorl and an orange color. This ADS Classics daffodil is strongly scented and a single bulb will make a clump which will bloom for many years. Registered in 1975, ‘Cedar Hills’ was bred from two ADS Classics, Impala (1966, Chinese White x T10/1) x Green Hills (1960, Moyness x Portrush). It blooms consistently and with it’s pristine white perianth and wonderful dark green eye that is surrounded by a clear yellow corona. 2019 John and Gertrude Wister Award

‘Las Vegas’ is the recipient of the 2019 Wister Award. Registered in 1981, it is a large trumpet daffodil with ivory white perianth segments and a vivid yellow corona. It’s consistent and large showy blooms are a stand-out in the garden. Dutch-bred, ‘Las Vegas’ is an outstanding trumpet daffodil for landscape purposes, and will make a clump of large blooms when given good drainage and room to increase. 2018 William G. Pannill Award

Grant Mitsch was the recipient of the 2018 Pannill Award for his flower, ‘Engagement Ring’, 3 W-WWY. Registered in 1994, ‘Engagement Ring’ was bred from two greats, Silken Sails (1964, Green Island x Chinese White) x Merlin (1956, Mahmoud x Mahmoud). It is an extremely consistent flower that opens nick free and develops a bright rim on a pristine white flower. This flower is one to cut and bring inside to watch its colors develop and is best seen up close. ‘Engagement Ring’ blooms during late mid-season. 2018 John and Gertrude Wister Award

‘Mount Hood’ is the recipient of the 2018 Wister Award. Registered in 1938, it has a proven track record for longevity and shows up annually on the show bench in the Historic section. Dutch-bred, ‘Mount Hood’ is one of the finest white trumpet daffodil for landscape purposes, and a single bulb will make a clump which will bloom for many years without digging and dividing providing it has sun, decent drainage and room to increase.
